Shrimp/Prawn tempura||step by step learn how to prepare shrimp for tempura|| how to make quick and easy cocktail sauce

The classic light weight batter is perfect with prawns and with vegetables.

Tempura is one of the most popular and well known Japanese dishes that s widely enjoyed all over the world.

It is specially enjoyed on cocktail nights.

It also goes best with rice bowls and noodle soup.

Let’s make Shrimp/prawn tempura πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡

Type- Starter, Appetizer

Preparation time- 15-20 minutes

Cooking time- 8-10 minutes


  • 1 lb fresh shrimp
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • 4-5 ice cubes
  • 1 cup tempura flour or you can easily make Tempura flour at home just by mixing- 1 cup all purpose flour+1/2 baking powder+1 egg yolk and your homemade tempura flour is ready
  • Oil to deep fry
  • 1 cup flour for coating


  • First wash your shrimps with water
  • Pat dry them
  • Take a sharp knife but be very careful
  • Slit your shrimps from head to before the tail
  • But don’t slit that it cuts into half
  • Now cut horizontally keeping alternate gaps
  • Place it on a board and start pinching the cut portion with your fingers until it seals up making a clicking noise
  • Prepare rest of the shrimp
  • Please go through my video thoroughly and you will easily make tempura
  • In a bowl add 4-5 ice cubes
  • In that add 1 cup water
  • Mix and add 1 cup tempura flour or your own homemade tempura mixture to the ice water
  • Now take 1 shrimp and roll over dry flour
  • Shake the excess flour
  • Dip into the tempura batter
  • And deep fry them
  • Fry until golden brown and crisp
  • Serve them with sweet chilli sauce and cocktail sauce

Ingredients for simple cocktail sauce:

  • 2 tbs mayonnaise
  • 2 tsp hot sauce
  • 1 tsp tomato ketchup

Procedure for simple cocktail sauce:

  • In a bowl add the mayonnaise
  • Add 2 tsp hot sauce and mix
  • Add 1 tsp tomato ketchup
  • Mix and keep it refrigerated
  • Serve it chilled
