Soya chunk curry|| No onion no garlic||100% veg 100% tasty

Soyabean or Soya Chunk is widely famous in India as Soya vadi or Meal Maker and also known as Soya nuggets.

It is a good source of protein and rich in fibre and aslo a good substitute,for those who refrain themselves from eating chicken or meat. It is a by product of extracting soya bean oil.

It is very easy to cook and becomes juicy and succulent by absorbing the juice from the curry.

It can be cooked both with or without onion and garlic. During festivals when there is a strict rule of following no onion and no garlic,then this recipe is a must.

So,let’s start making Soya Chunk Curry ๐Ÿ˜‹

Type- Curry

Preparation time- 15-20 minutes

Cooking time- 25-30 minutes

Okkkk,about Soya Chunk…I know it doesn’t need any description, specially in India it is very common in every home. But,like we stay in USA it is easily available in any Indian Store in these packets๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡


  • 200 gm soya chunks
  • 2 medium sized potatoes cut into cubes
  • 1 large tomato diced
  • 2 tbs ginger paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbs green chillies paste
  • 2 bay leaves
  • Roughly Crushed whole spices– 2-3 green cardamom,4-5 cloves,1/2 inch cinnamon stick
  • For spice mix-1 tsp turmeric powder,1 tsp cumin powder,1 tsp red chilli powder,1 tsp coriander powder,1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 cup hot water for the gravy
  • Salt to taste
  • Chopped coriander leaves for garnishing


  • For the soya chunks – boil water first,add 200 gm soya chunk and cover for 15 minutes
  • After 15 minutes drain the soya chunks
  • When the soya chunks are good to touch,the press each soya chunk to get rid of excess water
  • In a pan add,3 tbs of oil and allow it to get hot
  • Add the soya chunks and fry lightly and keep aside
  • In that pan,add 1 tbs oil if needed and add 2 bay leaves and the crushed whole spices with 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • Fry and add the potatoes
  • To it add salt to taste and a pinch of turmeric powder
  • Now add 2 tbs ginger paste and fry
  • Add the diced tomatoes and cook the tomatoes until soft
  • Add the rest of the spices
  • If need add 1/4 cup or 3-4 tbs water,so that it doesn’t get burnt
  • Cover and cook for 5-8 minutes on a medium flame
  • Now stir and see if the oil separated and add 1 cup hot water for the gravy
  • Again cover and cook for 10 minutes on a medium flame
  • At this point add the fried soya chunks and press them well into the gravy
  • Again cover and cook for 15 minutes on a medium low flame
  • And its done
