Alu bhorta/bharta/chokha (Indian Style Spiced Mashed Potatoes) are the different names of the mashed potato from different regions of India like Bengal,Odissa,Rajasthan etc.
Whenever I feel like cooking something from my childhood days comfort food,then this is always on my menu list. Steaming hot rice with this alu bhorta and a bhaja moong daal/simple moong beans soup.
It is flavorful and have a slight fiery aroma from the dried red chillies…..it can also be used as filling for sandwiches or stuffing for parathas (fried flat bread)
Let’s make aloo bharta/bhorta/Indian Style Spiced Mashed potatoes ๐๐๐
Type- Side dish
Preparation time- 10-12 minutes
Cooking time- 20-25 minutes (including the boiling of potatoes)
Ingredients:
- 2 large potato cut into halves then boiled
- 1/2 cup sliced onions
- 2-3 whole red chillies
- 3-4 chopped green chillies (adjust heat according to your taste)
- Salt to taste
Procedure:
- In a bowl add the potatoes and boiled them in a microwave at high power for 15-20 minutes (mine took 18 minutes)
- Drain the water and mash them
- In a pan add 2 tbs oil and fry 2-3 whole red chillies until brown and keep aside
- In that oil add 1/2 cup chopped onions and 3-4 chopped green chillies and fry till onion are brown in color and keep them aside
- In the mashed potatoes now add the brown onions and fried green chillies
- Now add the fried whole red chillies and start by breaking the red chillies and mixing them
- Add salt to taste
- Mix until everything comes together
- Now it’s ready
- Take some amount of it and start making balls and serve it with steamed rice
